Trump Reasserts Role in Mediating India-Pakistan Ceasefire Through Trade

Trump’s Claims of Global Peace Efforts

US President Donald Trump has once again claimed credit for mediating peace between India and Pakistan, attributing the resolution of their conflict to trade negotiations. On Sunday, Trump reiterated his assertion that he played a pivotal role in stopping conflicts worldwide, including the recent tensions between the two South Asian nations. This statement follows his May 10 announcement on social media, where he declared that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after discussions facilitated by Washington.

Nobel Peace Prize Nomination

The former president’s remarks come shortly after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested that Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in ending various global conflicts. Leavitt highlighted Trump’s achievements in brokering peace deals, including those between India and Pakistan, and other regions like the Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.

Trade as a Tool for Peace

In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized radio host Charlamagne Tha God for being unaware of his accomplishments, including ending five wars and resolving the India-Pakistan conflict. Trump emphasized that he used trade as a leverage point, stating that he often told conflicting parties they could continue fighting but would not receive trade deals from the US. This approach, according to Trump, led to the cessation of hostilities.

Recent Trade Announcements

On Wednesday, Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on all goods from India starting August 1, alongside penalties for purchasing Russian crude oil and military equipment. For Pakistan, the tariff was set at 19 percent. Additionally, Trump revealed a new trade agreement with Pakistan aimed at developing its “massive oil reserves.”

Indian Government’s Response

Despite Trump’s claims, Indian officials have refuted any third-party intervention in their dealings with Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in Parliament that no foreign leader influenced India’s decision to halt Operation Sindoor following a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also confirmed there was no link between the ceasefire and trade negotiations as suggested by Trump.
