Turkey has taken a significant step in advancing its defense capabilities by unveiling the Tayfun Block-4, its first hypersonic ballistic missile. This development was showcased at the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025 in Istanbul, marking a milestone for Turkey’s defense sector. The missile, developed by Turkish defense giant Roketsan, represents the hypersonic version of the Tayfun missile, which is known as Turkey’s longest-range indigenously produced ballistic missile.
The Tayfun Block-4 measures 6.5 meters in length and weighs 2,300 kilograms. It boasts an impressive range of 800 kilometers, as reported by Turkey Today. According to Roketsan, this new version of the Tayfun missile weighs over 7 tons and is equipped with a multi-purpose warhead. It is designed to destroy strategic targets such as air defense systems, command and control centers, military hangars, and critical military facilities from significant distances.
Hypersonic missiles are advanced weapons capable of maneuvering mid-flight at speeds exceeding Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. This makes them difficult to track and intercept. While most ballistic missiles reach hypersonic speeds during their flight, especially during descent towards their targets, the Tayfun Block-4’s capabilities enhance Turkey’s strategic military assets.
The unveiling of the Tayfun Block-4 comes amid growing political and defense ties between Turkey and Pakistan. Following military tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan’s defense relationship with Turkey has gained attention. Despite denials of arms transfers from both nations, reports indicate that Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones were used by Pakistan in conflicts with India. Ankara has shown solidarity with Islamabad during these tensions and continues to be a reliable defense partner for Pakistan.
The strengthening of Turkey-Pakistan defense ties reflects shifting regional dynamics. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s recent visit to Islamabad aimed to enhance cooperation across various sectors, including defense, economy, culture, and education. As Turkey continues to expand its defense industry capabilities, its role as a key player in regional security is becoming increasingly prominent.
