Kate Kniveton, who served as the Member of Parliament for Burton from 2019 to 2024, has publicly shared her harrowing experiences of abuse during her marriage to former MP Andrew Griffiths. In a candid revelation reported by Metro, Kniveton accused Griffiths of sexually assaulting her while she slept and verbally abusing their newborn child. She described how Griffiths dismissed her threats to report his actions, asserting that no one would believe her due to his influential position.
Kniveton highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by survivors even after leaving abusive relationships. She criticized family courts for failing to protect vulnerable children adequately. Despite separating from Griffiths in 2018, she continued to endure legal harassment. Her experience underscores the pervasive nature of domestic abuse, which transcends social and economic boundaries.
Married in 2013, Kniveton described Griffiths as charming and charismatic, traits that initially masked warning signs of abuse. She recounted how outsiders perceived their relationship as perfect, unaware of the years of abuse she suffered. Griffiths’ public image as a respected MP and his connections with law enforcement made Kniveton feel trapped and powerless.
The abuse extended beyond Kniveton to their infant daughter. She recalled a particularly distressing incident when Griffiths shouted aggressively at their two-week-old baby for crying. This moment marked a turning point for Kniveton, realizing the serious risk posed to her child.
Andrew Griffiths’ political career was marred by scandal when he was dismissed from his government role after sending explicit messages to female constituents. In December 2021, a family court judge ruled that he had raped and repeatedly assaulted Kniveton.
Kniveton’s story is featured in the ITV1 and ITVX documentary “Breaking The Silence: Kate’s Story.” The documentary explores her decade-long ordeal and highlights systemic issues within the family court system, which handles thousands of domestic abuse cases annually.
