The US Embassy in India has issued a stern warning regarding visa revocation for individuals committing crimes such as assault, theft, or burglary in the United States. This advisory follows an incident involving an Indian woman caught stealing items worth Rs 1.1 lakh from a Target store in Illinois. The embassy emphasized that such criminal acts could lead to the revocation of a current visa and render individuals ineligible for future US visas, effectively barring re-entry into the country.
The incident occurred on May 1, when an Indian woman allegedly spent over seven hours inside a Target store, collecting items worth approximately $1,300 (Rs 1.1 lakh) before attempting to leave without paying. The situation escalated when a Target employee confronted her, leading to a viral video that brought the case to public attention. The footage, captured by police bodycam, shows the employee accusing the woman of trying to exit with unpaid merchandise.
In response to this incident, the US Embassy took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to remind foreign visitors of the legal consequences of such actions. The embassy’s post highlighted that committing crimes like theft not only results in legal issues but also affects visa status. According to congress.gov, theft is a criminal offense under various state laws and can also violate federal laws depending on the circumstances.
The accused woman offered to pay for the items when confronted by police but was subsequently handcuffed and taken to the police station. She faces felony charges, although she has not yet been formally arrested. The incident underscores the importance of adhering to US laws and regulations while visiting the country.
The US Embassy’s advisory serves as a crucial reminder for all foreign visitors about the significance of respecting local laws. It highlights the potential immigration consequences of criminal activities and reinforces the United States’ commitment to maintaining law and order.
