White House envoy Steve Witkoff is set to visit Russia on Wednesday, aiming to negotiate a peace deal just days before President Donald Trump’s August 8 deadline. This deadline demands that Moscow agree to a ceasefire or face severe sanctions. Originally, Russian President Vladimir Putin was given a 50-day period in mid-July, but Trump recently shortened this timeline by nearly a month. Despite these efforts, the Kremlin’s aggressive actions in Ukraine remain unabated.
If no agreement is reached by Friday, the U.S. plans to impose 100% sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil, targeting Putin’s key economic resource. This move aims to deter nations like India and China, the largest buyers of Russian oil, from supporting Russia’s economy and its military endeavors. However, reports indicate that Witkoff’s mission may not yield significant progress, as Putin appears unfazed by the threat of secondary sanctions.
President Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with India and China’s continued trade with Russia, threatening to significantly increase tariffs on India within 24 hours. The White House and Treasury Department have yet to clarify the exact tariff rates. India has criticized these potential tariffs as “unjustified and unreasonable,” highlighting previous U.S. encouragement to import Russian gas for global energy stability.
Ukraine has accused India of indirectly supporting Russia’s military efforts by supplying components found in Russian attack drones used against Ukrainian targets. These drones have been responsible for civilian casualties and infrastructure damage, intensifying calls for stricter controls on foreign-made parts reaching Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized the importance of robust sanctions against Russia and its allies to end the conflict. He argues that increased pressure through comprehensive sanctions could contribute significantly to achieving peace.
