US Visa Challenges Lead to 70-80% Decline in Indian Student Arrivals

US universities are experiencing a dramatic reduction in the number of Indian students arriving for studies, with a reported 70-80% drop. This decline is attributed to ongoing visa challenges under the current US administration, which have created significant barriers for international students. Education consultants in Hyderabad have observed a marked decrease in outbound student traffic due to a freeze on visa appointment slots and an increase in visa rejection rates.
Typically, by this time of year, most students would have completed their visa interviews and be preparing to travel. However, this year, many are still waiting for appointment slots to open. Sanjeev Rai from Hyderabad Overseas Consultant expressed frustration over the situation, noting it as the worst in years. Although US authorities promised phased releases of visa slots, the lack of clarity has left students anxious and uncertain about their future plans.
The uncertainty surrounding US visa appointments has led some students to consider other countries for their education. A 23-year-old student shared their decision to withdraw their application to study in the US and instead explore opportunities in Germany for a master’s degree in automotive engineering.
Arvind Manduva from I20 Fever consultancy highlighted the potential impact on students’ dreams if visa slots are not released soon. The consultancy is receiving numerous calls from concerned students and parents daily. Additionally, students who secured interview appointments as early as March are now facing higher rejection rates than usual.
A common reason for visa denials is Section 214(b) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act, which requires applicants to demonstrate sufficient ties to their home country. Ankit Jain from Window Overseas Education Consultancy noted that many students who typically would have been approved are now being denied visas under this section.
The US Consulate General in Hyderabad has announced that visa slots have resumed and advised students to check for appointment availability. A spokesperson emphasized the importance of early applications and anticipating additional processing time due to increased scrutiny.
While the US faces challenges with student visas, Europe is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Indian students. According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as of January 1, 2024, over 11.6 lakh Indian students were studying abroad, with Europe seeing a steady rise in numbers.
