President Donald Trump has taken a prominent role in the planning of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, leading to criticism from USA Today columnist Nancy Armour. Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday to establish a task force, which includes Vice President JD Vance, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. The task force aims to showcase America’s strengths during the upcoming Olympics.
Nancy Armour’s column, titled “Olympics Organizers Willing to Treat Trump Like a Toddler to Protect 2028 LA Games,” compares Trump to a “toddler” and a “rambunctious puppy.” Armour suggests that the task force is a strategic move by organizers to keep Trump engaged without giving him substantial control. She argues that this approach ensures Trump’s vested interest in the event’s success while minimizing potential disruptions.
The task force’s primary goals include coordinating federal, state, and local government efforts on transportation and streamlining visa processing for international participants. Armour highlights concerns about Trump’s suggestion to deploy the National Guard or military for Olympic security, contrasting it with his previous remarks about unnecessary military presence during recent Los Angeles riots.
Before the 2028 Olympics, the U.S. will host the FIFA World Cup in 2026, an event Trump has enthusiastically supported. His involvement in these major sports events underscores his interest in using them as platforms to promote national pride and international cooperation.
