A Coldplay concert in Boston became the unexpected stage for a viral sensation when a stadium jumbotron captured an awkward moment between Andy Byron, the former CEO of data company Astronomer, and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot. As the camera focused on the pair mid-embrace, Byron quickly ducked out of view while Cabot hid her face in her hands. Vocalist Chris Martin’s quip, “They’re either having an affair or just very shy,” ignited a social media frenzy.
The viral clip presented a unique opportunity for major brands to engage with audiences through clever marketing strategies. IKEA capitalized on the moment by posting an image of a stuffed panda hugging an orangutan on Instagram, captioned with “Don’t get caught… without these! Drama-free cuddles guaranteed,” and featuring the phrase “HR approved.” Tesla joined in with a tech-savvy twist, tweeting about enjoying a loaner Tesla while one’s own car is in service, likening it to taking the vehicle to a Coldplay concert. The post humorously suggested that “your car will know.”
GlobeAir, a private jet charter service, shared the viral clip with a luxurious twist, promoting quick escapes from Boston to Hawaii. Meanwhile, Frido, a pillow and mattress company, photoshopped Byron onto their cuddle pillow with the caption, “Bro could’ve just used our Cuddle Pillow and avoided all that embarrassment.” Hotels & Resorts Worldwide leaned into the HR theme with a scenic beach video captioned, “This and your HR manager,” while Ryanair humorously referenced their seating policy with a tweet stating, “Ryanair, Coldplay. Splitting up couples.”
Hulu contributed to the conversation by sharing a clip from Modern Family featuring Phil Dunphy caught on the kiss cam with his mother-in-law. The caption reminded viewers that “what happens on the Jumbotron does not always stay on the Jumbotron.”
In the aftermath of the viral incident, Andy Byron resigned as CEO of Astronomer on July 19. The company appointed cofounder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy as interim CEO.
