Majority of Voters Favor a Third Party, But Not Led by Elon Musk

Voter Support for a Third Political Party

A recent Fox News poll reveals that over half of voters are in favor of establishing a third major political party. The survey indicates that 53% of respondents believe a third party is a good idea, compared to 42% who disagree. This marks a decrease from 2010 when the margin was a more significant 27 points. The decline is primarily attributed to a shift in Republican opinion, with fewer Republicans now supporting the idea compared to 15 years ago.

Independents and Democrats Show Strong Support

The poll highlights that independents and Democrats are particularly supportive of the concept of a third party. Independents favor the idea by a 44-point margin, while Democrats show a 20-point margin of support. In contrast, Republicans are less enthusiastic, with a 9-point margin opposing the formation of a new party.

Elon Musk’s Proposed Party Faces Resistance

Despite general support for a third party, voters are largely opposed to one led by Elon Musk. A significant 75% of respondents express reluctance to back a Musk-led party, with only 22% showing openness to the idea. The demographic most receptive to Musk’s proposal includes men, particularly Republican men and those under age 45.

Dissatisfaction with Current Political Parties

The survey underscores widespread dissatisfaction with both major parties. A majority of voters believe neither the Democratic nor Republican parties have clear plans to address national issues. This sentiment fuels interest in alternative political options, although skepticism remains about the viability and effectiveness of third-party candidates.

Challenges Facing Third Parties

The poll also explores perceptions of third-party candidates, with many voters viewing them as spoilers rather than viable alternatives. While some see them as necessary due to the failures of existing parties, others doubt their qualifications and potential success in the political arena. Additionally, there is a strong belief that the U.S. political system is biased against third parties.

Survey Methodology

Conducted from July 18-21, 2025, this Fox News survey involved interviews with 1,000 registered voters. The methodology included landline and cellphone interviews as well as online responses. The results have a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
