Country singer Walker Hayes recently shared a deeply personal story about a challenging period in his life that nearly jeopardized his sobriety. During an appearance on the ‘K-Love Morning Show,’ the 45-year-old artist recounted the emotional turmoil following the loss of his seventh child, Oakleigh, who tragically passed away on the day she was born in June 2018. At the time, Hayes had been sober for two-and-a-half years but found himself on the brink of self-destruction after her funeral.
Hayes described driving to a bar called 55 South, contemplating breaking his sobriety by getting into a fight with patrons inside. However, he realized he had forgotten his wallet, which led him to return home. Upon arriving, he saw his wife, Laney, sitting alone in their house, mourning their daughter. This moment of clarity made him reconsider his actions, recognizing the potential consequences of relapsing and the impact it would have on his family.
Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Hayes acknowledged the need for redemption and support. He realized that succumbing to his urges would only lead to further pain and a restart of the rehabilitation process. This insight reinforced his commitment to sobriety and his family.
Hayes has been candid about his struggles with alcohol addiction, often incorporating these experiences into his music. In 2024, he released an album titled “Sober Thoughts,” which delves into his journey towards sobriety. During promotions for the album, he appeared on “Today with Hoda and Jenna,” discussing how he decided to quit drinking after realizing the toll it was taking on his health.
Hayes expressed gratitude for his sobriety journey, emphasizing how it has brought clarity and vitality back into his life. He continues to write songs about overcoming addiction, celebrating the freedom and renewed energy that sobriety has given him.
