Wayne Gretzky, hockey’s greatest player, was never drafted into the NHL. He joined the WHA at 17 and later the Edmonton Oilers. A unique contract allowed him to bypass the draft. When the WHA merged with the NHL, Gretzky stayed with Edmonton. He led the Oilers to four Stanley Cups and set numerous records.
