On the day of a tragic double murder at Devil’s Den State Park, a couple reported an unsettling encounter with a man who matched the description of the suspect, Andrew James McGann. The couple, accompanied by a brother, sister, and a pet dog, noticed the man on the trail. They described him as odd and out of place, dressed entirely in black and carrying a large mesh-style athletic bag. The interaction left them deeply unsettled, as they received what they termed a “death stare” from him.
The suspect, 28-year-old Andrew James McGann, was later identified through photos released by authorities. Witnesses also noted that his car had duct tape over the license plate, suggesting premeditation. McGann was apprehended at a barbershop in Springdale while getting a haircut. He faces two counts of capital murder for the deaths of Clinton Brink, 43, and Cristen Brink, 41.
The Brinks were hiking with their two young daughters when they were fatally attacked on July 26. Arkansas State Police confirmed that they died from stab wounds inflicted by a knife. Despite initial fears, authorities have found no evidence that the family was specifically targeted. ASP Director Col. Mike Hagar emphasized that it appeared to be a random act of violence.
McGann confessed to the murders during an interview with investigators. DNA evidence from the crime scene matched his DNA, further confirming his involvement. A search of his residence yielded items consistent with the crime. Authorities believe McGann sustained injuries during the attack, which helped lead to his capture.
The incident has shocked the local community, highlighting concerns about safety in public parks. McGann’s arraignment is scheduled for August 14. The Brinks’ daughters were unharmed in the attack and are currently being cared for by family members.
