A 32-year-old woman named Ranjitha from Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu has died after setting herself on fire. This tragic act was allegedly a protest against continuous sexual harassment by her father-in-law and years of dowry-related abuse by her in-laws. Ranjitha suffered severe burns covering 70 percent of her body and was taken to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for treatment. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
In a heart-wrenching video recorded before her death, Ranjitha, with a charred face and weak voice, accused her father-in-law of inappropriate behavior, stating, “My father-in-law hugged me. I couldn’t take it. That’s why I immolated myself.” Her young son, a class seven student, supported her claims in another video, revealing that his mother had confided in him about the harassment. Ranjitha’s family has further alleged that the abuse extended beyond her father-in-law’s actions. They claim she faced ongoing dowry harassment from her husband and other in-laws. Her sister, Alagasundari, shared with reporters that Ranjitha endured 13 years of torment, with demands for land and gold. She also described how Ranjitha’s husband would drink, physically abuse her, and compel her to silently endure the mistreatment.
The local police have registered a case of suicide and are actively investigating the allegations. A senior police officer confirmed the investigation into the sexual harassment claims made by Ranjitha. Regarding the dowry harassment allegations, the officer noted that since the marriage took place 13 years ago, it might not fall under the Dowry Prohibition Act, but all aspects are being examined.
Ranjitha’s case has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about the safety of women facing abuse within their marital homes. Activists are calling for a thorough and sensitive investigation into her death to ensure justice is served.
