Zelenskyy Urges Putin to Join Trilateral Talks with Trump

Zelenskyy Calls for Courage in Peace Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to demonstrate bravery by agreeing to a trilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. This call for dialogue was confirmed by Zelenskyy on Thursday, following a conversation with Trump the previous day. The proposed meeting, which could occur as soon as next week, aims to include European leaders and seeks to address ongoing conflicts. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s willingness to engage in discussions, highlighting the importance of a courageous approach from Russia to end the war.

Challenges in Organizing the Historic Meeting

Despite months of efforts by the Trump administration to facilitate a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, the Kremlin has consistently resisted such engagements. Although Russian state media reported Putin’s openness to the idea, they noted that necessary conditions for negotiations have not yet been established. A Telegram post by Russian state news agency RIA echoed this sentiment, indicating that the conditions remain far from being met.

U.S. and Russian Diplomatic Interactions

Trump’s foreign policy advisor stated that while the concept of a trilateral meeting was mentioned during discussions between Putin and White House envoy Steve Witkoff, it was not a focal point of their talks. Kremlin foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov confirmed that the option was briefly raised but not elaborated upon. Ushakov suggested prioritizing preparations for a bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin to ensure its success.

European Involvement in Peace Efforts

Zelenskyy has been actively engaging with European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron, to align their positions on key security issues. He stressed the importance of a unified European perspective in any U.S.-Russia-Ukraine discussions. Both Germany and France have assumed leadership roles in addressing the conflict in Ukraine, particularly following Trump’s return to the White House earlier this year. The U.K. is also involved in these diplomatic efforts, although it remains unconfirmed if Zelenskyy has discussed the trilateral meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
