Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, a leading candidate in the New York City mayoral race, has received a significant endorsement from Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat. Espaillat, recognized as one of the city’s most influential Latino leaders, announced his support for Mamdani, who could become the first Muslim mayor of New York City if elected. In a social media post, Mamdani expressed gratitude to Espaillat for joining his campaign focused on affordability and opposing President Donald Trump’s policies. He emphasized their shared commitment to protecting working-class and immigrant communities in the city.

The endorsement was formally announced at a campaign event where Espaillat, a five-term congressman and chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, highlighted his support for Mamdani’s vision for New York City. This development is seen as a setback for former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who had previously received Espaillat’s endorsement during the Democratic primary. Despite losing the nomination to Mamdani, Cuomo remains on the November ballot as an independent candidate.
