Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani returned from a vacation in Uganda to face intense media scrutiny. On Wednesday morning, he dodged questions from reporters about a recent mass shooting in midtown Manhattan that claimed four lives, including that of NYPD officer Didarul Islam. Despite meeting with the officer’s family for an hour, Mamdani avoided engaging with the press afterward. Photographs captured him embracing a family member of the deceased officer as he departed.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday evening when Shane Tamura, a lone gunman, entered a midtown Manhattan office building and opened fire. The attack resulted in the deaths of four individuals: NYPD officer Didarul Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, security guard Aland Etienne, and Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management. Tamura ended the rampage by taking his own life.
While still in Uganda, Mamdani expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating he was “heartbroken” and holding the victims and their families in his thoughts. However, his previous calls to defund the police and disband the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group (SRG) have resurfaced, drawing renewed attention. The SRG is a specialized unit tasked with handling riots, civil disorder, and shootings.
Mamdani has been vocal about his intention to dismantle the SRG if elected mayor, citing its role in what he describes as harassment and arrests of striking workers. He argues that the unit has cost taxpayers millions in lawsuit settlements and has violated New Yorkers’ First Amendment rights. This stance has become a focal point of debate following the recent shooting.
Mamdani is scheduled to hold a press conference on Wednesday afternoon to address the shooting and his controversial positions on police reform. The event is expected to further illuminate his policies and how they align with public safety concerns in New York City.
