Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, recently returned from his wedding vacation in Uganda, visited the family of slain NYPD officer Didarul Islam on Wednesday. Officer Islam was tragically killed in a mass shooting at an office building in midtown Manhattan on Monday. The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, also took the lives of Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, security guard Aland Etienne, and Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management, before committing suicide. Mamdani arrived back in New York City on Wednesday morning and immediately went to the home of Officer Islam’s family. The New York Post captured images of Mamdani approaching the family’s residence with flowers in hand. Although he did not speak to reporters after his visit, Mamdani later shared during a press conference that the family welcomed him warmly and insisted he join them for breakfast. He spent nearly an hour with them, describing the experience as deeply moving.
Zohran Mamdani has previously advocated for defunding the police and disbanding the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group (SRG), which handles mass shootings and civil disorder. This stance has resurfaced following the recent shooting. Despite avoiding questions immediately after his visit with Officer Islam’s family, Mamdani addressed these issues later in the day. He clarified that he is not running to defund the police but has criticized the SRG for its actions during protests.
In response to the tragic events, Mamdani echoed New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s call for a national ban on assault rifles. Although Governor Hochul has not endorsed Mamdani, his alignment with her stance highlights his commitment to addressing gun violence.
Mamdani’s past comments about police officers have also come under scrutiny. In 2020, he made a controversial post mocking a police officer’s emotional breakdown. During the press conference, Mamdani distanced himself from those remarks, emphasizing his respect for police officers and acknowledging the challenges they face. The visit to Officer Islam’s family and Mamdani’s subsequent statements have drawn significant public attention, potentially impacting his mayoral campaign. As discussions around policing and gun control continue to dominate political discourse in New York City, Mamdani’s actions and words will likely be closely examined by voters.
