Russia Condemns US Trade Pressure on India

Russia has openly criticized the United States for exerting what it calls illegal trade pressure on India regarding its oil imports from Russia. This follows a statement by US President Donald Trump, who threatened to increase tariffs on India due to its purchase of Russian oil. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed reporters, emphasizing that such threats are not legally justified. He reiterated that sovereign nations possess the right to independently choose their trading partners without external coercion.

Sovereign Nations’ Right to Trade

Peskov highlighted the importance of sovereignty in international trade, stating, “We believe that sovereign countries should have and do have the right to choose their own trading partners, partners for trade and economic cooperation, and to choose for themselves the forms of trade and economic cooperation that are in the interests of a particular country.” This statement underscores Russia’s stance on respecting national sovereignty in global economic relations.

US Sanctions and India’s Response

President Trump announced plans to impose new sanctions on Russia and countries purchasing its energy exports unless Russia addresses its conflict with Ukraine. Despite this ultimatum, Russian President Vladimir Putin has maintained his position on the war. In response, India has labeled Trump’s tariff threats as “unjustified” and pledged to protect its economic interests. The Indian government asserts that it will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.

India’s Defense of Its Economic Decisions

India has reminded the United States that it began importing Russian oil following encouragement from Washington after the Ukraine conflict erupted. The Indian foreign ministry also criticized the European Union for targeting Indian refiners over crude exports while engaging in their own trade with Russia. According to Indian officials, these imports are essential due to global market conditions, and other nations criticizing India are themselves engaged in similar trade practices with Russia.

Despite the US threats, two Indian government sources informed Reuters that India will continue purchasing oil from Russia. This decision reflects India’s commitment to maintaining its energy security and economic stability amid international pressure.
