President Donald Trump is preparing to engage in direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin as early as next week, according to Fox News. This meeting aims to pave the way for subsequent three-way talks involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The announcement follows a “highly productive” meeting between U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin, which Trump described as making “great progress” on his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump emphasized the urgency of ending the ongoing conflict and expressed his commitment to working with European allies towards this goal.
During the discussions with Witkoff, Putin expressed a desire to meet with Trump, contingent on the talks being linked to a peace agreement. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump is open to meeting both Putin and Zelenskyy, highlighting Trump’s determination to bring an end to the war. The potential meetings are seen as a significant step towards negotiating peace in the region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also communicated with Trump and other European leaders, reiterating Ukraine’s firm position that the war must conclude honestly and justly. Zelenskyy underscored Ukraine’s commitment to defending its independence while seeking a lasting peace. He expressed gratitude for the support from European partners during these critical discussions.
In mid-July, Trump had threatened severe tariffs on Russia if a peace deal was not reached within a specified timeframe. However, he later adjusted this stance amid complex trade negotiations with India and China. Despite these challenges, Trump remains focused on facilitating a resolution to the conflict through diplomatic channels.
As these developments unfold, the international community watches closely, hopeful that these high-level meetings could lead to meaningful progress towards peace in Ukraine.
