US President Donald Trump announced significant progress in discussions with Russia aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict. He speculated that the hefty tariffs imposed on India for purchasing Russian oil might have influenced these talks. Trump has informed European allies of his intention to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky soon, aiming to mediate peace between the two nations.
The decision to convene a meeting with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine came shortly after Trump increased tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent. This move was in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian energy. The tariff hike followed a lengthy meeting between Putin and a US special envoy in Moscow. Trump expressed uncertainty about whether the tariffs directly impacted the progress in talks but acknowledged productive discussions with Russia.
Trump criticized India for profiting from Russian oil by selling it on the open market. He accused New Delhi of prioritizing profits over the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. When questioned about the possibility of lifting tariffs if an agreement with Moscow is reached, Trump suggested it could be considered but emphasized that India currently faces a 50 percent tariff.
Trump hinted at the possibility of extending similar tariffs to other countries, including China, which also imports Russian oil. He indicated that further punitive measures could be applied to nations supporting Russia’s oil industry, which funds its war efforts in Ukraine.
India has labeled Trump’s new tariffs as “unfortunate” and vowed to protect its national interests. New Delhi emphasized that its energy imports are driven by market factors and aimed at ensuring energy security for its population. The new tariffs are set to take effect in 21 days, prompting India to prepare necessary actions to counteract these measures.
